Choosing a Periodical Database
What is a periodical database?
It is a collection of articles from journals, magazine, and newspapers. A database allows you to search multiple periodicals at the same time. Many databases are available electronically, but some are only available in print. The libraries subscribe to over 150 periodical databases.
How do you select the right database for your research?

First, know what you're looking for.
Suppose you are investigating the West Nile Virus.
Do you need recent news about the topic?

Do you need some general research studies on the virus?

Do you need in-depth, specialized research?

Second, look at the database.
- Does it cover the subject you're researching?
- What kinds of publications does it include?
- Does it cover the time period you need?
- Does it include abstracts of articles or make the full text available?

Remember, librarians are happy to work with you to select the best databases for your research.
