Focusing on the Library Catalog

What can you find in the catalog?

Web pages
Journals
CDs
DVDs
Videos
LPs
Cassettes
Books, electronic
Books, printed

Chapters within books
Fiction
Nonfiction
Poetry
Anthologies
Reference Books
Numerical data
All disciplines and subjects

How do you search the catalog?

Search the catalog through a combination of exact information, e.g., author or title, and keywords and subject headings.

Keywords—words that you select

Subject headings—descriptive phrases determined by librarians and assigned to books, journals, web pages, etc.

What do you do once you find something in the catalog that you want to use?

If it is electronic—link directly from the catalog to the item
If it is audio-visual material—write down the call number and go to the listening room
If it is a book—be sure to write down the full call number and first check for status and location. Location tells you where within our system it is, status tells you whether it is checked out or not.

Other things you might see:

In process
On order
Ask librarian
[date] billed

You might want to recall a book that is checked out—shows a due date or even the word “billed.” This just means the book is over due. 99% of the time we can get the book back for you within a few days.
