RG-EV: Evaluation & Planning Office Records

Scope and content:
The bulk of the collection is from the 1980s and consists of reports, memos, and statistical studies conducted by the Office of Evaluation & Planning (title varies, also called Office of Research & Evaluation in the late 1980s), primarily for the Admissions Office. Edward Barboni was director of the office 1981-87, Ruth Wheeler 1987-89. Katharine Guroff served part time some years during the early and middle 1970s as Institutional Researcher in the Office of the Dean, and a few of her studies are included.

Fourteen large cartons of papers came from the office to the Archives in 1994. Items discarded were: duplicate copies, materials from outside institutions not related to Grinnell, and computer print-outs of data which was summarized in reports, which were retained (those computer files no longer exist at the Computer Center). Discard decisions were based on consultations with several faculty and administrators.

Papers within folders are, where possible, arranged chronologically. Undated papers were left next to adjacent papers as they arrived from the Office. Since the filing order of the papers as received was not always consistent, researchers should use care in attributing dates.
