The Listening Room (Burling) and Audio-Visual Center (ARH) Collections

The Collection

The Grinnell College Libraries offer thirteen private listening stations and four video stations tucked away in the Listening Room on the lower level of Burling Library. The Listening Room contains over 19,000 cataloged titles in compact disc, LP record, audio cassette, DVD, and videotape formats. Approximately 1,000 new titles are added yearly. In addition, many foreign language DVDS and videos are housed in the Audio-Visual Center in 210-220 ARH. Faculty members may choose to place the Libraries' media materials at the AV Center as well as in Burling. For more information about spaces and viewing capabiliites at the AV Center please see the AV Center Web site: http://www.grinnell.edu/offices/avcenter/about/ or call Ralph Helt at 3073.

Using the Listening Room and AV Center

The Listening Room and AV Center collections are open to the faculty, staff and students of Grinnell College. Vistors and Grinnell Residents are welcome to make use of Listening Room material in the Listening Room.

1. All materials must be checked out before leaving the Listening Room or the AV Center. You will need to use your college P-Card to use both collections. (Visitors and Grinnell Residents may speak to the Listening Room supervisor to determine appropriate security.)

2. All Listening Room and AV Center materials are listed in the Libraries' online catalog. The catalog is accessible from any computer connected to the internet. Find the item you want to listen to or view, write down the call number and the location. You'll need to ask at the designated location for the item you are looking for. An AV Center or Listening Room worker will retrieve the item for you. Please ask for assistance as needed.

3. To check out any material, you will need to present your Grinnell College ID. We provide headphones. For CDs or LPs you may sit at any station in the Listening Room. For audio cassettes there are designated stations where you can control the tape. Ask the staff to point these out to you. For videos choose one of the four video stations. Assistants at the AV Center will direct you to appropriate spaces for viewing DVDs or videos.

4. Please keep conversations and headphone volume levels to a minimum.

5. During peak times, patrons listening or viewing for classes will have priority over patrons listening or viewing for recreational purposes.

Please see additional policies for the Libraries' media collections.
